OverviewLinda M. Hasselstrom and James W. Parker, both South Dakotans, find stories everywhere in the prairies and hills. His photographs tell stories of forgotten places and lives through light, shadow, and color, creating love stories to the land. Linda's poems explore the same landscapes, finding humanity in the lands and people she knows and imagines. She can see herself walking to Decker's Market in Lusk, Wyoming, and she recognizes that corporate-created pollution in Bhopal leads husbands to divorce wives whose babies die in their wombs, but she saves a spider instead of killing it. She watches spruce trees bow like ladies, and tastes summer in the juice of a plum. Like all writers, she battles with autocorrect on her computer. Here are two poets: one with words, one with photographs, collaborating to show their love and understanding of western South Dakota, creating a book filled with compassion, humility, and gentle humor. Hasselstrom is an award-winning poet and writer of the High Plains whose work is rooted in the arid landscape of her southwestern South Dakota ranch; she holds degrees from the University of South Dakota and University of Missouri. Author of seventeen books of nonfiction and poetry, she has conducted hundreds of readings, workshops, talks and lectures about writing and publishing for audiences ranging from elementary students to senior citizens. She was the resident writer and instructor at Windbreak House, established as a retreat in 1996, and operated until 2019. The eldest son of a Western historian, photographer James Parker has always been fascinated by the architectural detritus and geologic history of the West. His most recent book, ""Southwestern Sojourn: A Photographer's Journal"" follows the author on a canoe journey down Utah's Green River. Both photographic essay and self-reflective rambling, the book brings together his love for outdoor adventure, the geology of the Southwest, and his images. Two other monographs by Parker showcase photographs in ""A Disappearing Agrarian Landscape"" & ""Stories Told in Things Left Behind,"" focussing on interior spaces and rural landscapes. Parker also writes his own blog, ""Life As Itinerant Artist"", and helps others develop their own voices. His writing style has evolved since ""Small Pig"", his first published story at the age of 9. As an advertising creative, Parker has well-honed design and verbal skills. Graduating from commercial work in 2005, he concentrates mainly on fine art photography, writing, and publishing.
