Walk, Run, Fly Again

Overview

What happens when everything is taken from you... and you refuse to accept it? Walk, Run, Fly Again is the gripping true story of John Alvarez, a U.S. special operations pilot whose life changes in an instant after a counter-drug mission ends in a crash in a jungle river in Ecuador. Against impossible odds, John survives-but at the cost of a limb and other injuries which threaten his very identity, and the career he had spent his entire life building. What follows is a battle far beyond physical recovery. Despite being told that returning to combat flight would be impossible, John sets out to do what had never been done before: fight his way back to the cockpit and reclaim his place in the skies. He would become the first U.S. military pilot to return to full, unrestricted combat flight status after amputation. This is not simply a story of grit and determination. It is a story of faith that persists in uncertainty, of love that carries through the darkest moments, and of the brotherhood who refuse to let him fall. In the space between who he was and who he is becoming, John discovers that the strength to rise again is never his alone. Written by his eldest child, Lisette Alvarez-an award-winning storyteller who experienced the journey at the tender age of five-Walk, Run, Fly Again is a powerful account of resilience, sacrifice, and the unbreakable bond of family. Forged after impact. Tempered by grace.

Reviews

A must read! A story of resilience, faith and family. From a helicopter incident, he was tested to beat the odds. With his pursuit of excellence, he had an opportunity to fly the Chief of Staff Air Force (CSAF) to prove his tenacity. On the way to the Pave Low, I told the CSAF that he would be flying with a ""prosthetic"" leg pilot. He immediately responded-"" Who approved that""? I replied-""Let's discuss that after the flight"". When he landed we adjourned to the Hurlburt ""Houch"" where the CSAF participated in a post-flight celebration. As we departed, his only comment was ""We need to do more of this"". - General Charles ""Charlie"" Holland, USAF (Ret.), Former AFSOC and USSOCOM Commander John's story of courage and determination has been an inspiration for all of us who flew with him for a long time. I was thrilled to see it captured in a truly well written book, and I know that it will inspire countless others for years to come! - Lt Gen Tom Trask, USAF (Ret.), Former Vice Commander, US Special Operations Command The Spirit of a Warrior. Lisette Alvarez beautifully illustrates the embodiment of this by relaying one year (albeit a significant one!) in the life of her father, Col (Ret) John Alvarez. I've known Johnny for many, many years. He possesses the ""never quit"" mindset; and so, after the devastating event of September 1996, Johnny charts a course to overcome all obstacles with courage, resilience and persistence. Simply put, he set unprecedented goals for himself and then proceeded to crush them! Walk, Run, Fly Again is an inspirational book for service members; but honestly this is a great read for anyone wanting to be fundamentally inspired! - Lt Gen Marshall ""Brad"" Webb, USAF (Ret.), Former AFSOC and AETC Commander ""A breathtaking, heart pounding, eye watering account of John's journey from tragedy to triumph. Each chapter reminds us faith, family, and friendships help redefine victory one day, one dream, and one step at a time. A lifetime of lessons packed into each harrowing chapter..."" -CMSgt (Ret) Greg Smith Former AFSOC and USSOCOM Senior Enlisted Leader
