Wabeno

Overview

Beneath the glittering facade of Peter Dietrich's multi-million-dollar industrial empire lies a dark and deadly secret he thought long buried, but when the Dietrich family gathers at their lavish Minnesota estate to celebrate his eightieth birthday, that secret begins to surface--in blood... First, Peter's adult children die gruesomely, succumbing to strange and agonizing illnesses. Then his former business partners begin to die under similarly brutal circumstances. As panic grips the family and investigators search for answers, Peter is forced to confront the chilling truth: someone is systematically targeting him, using the bodies of his children and associates as a canvas for a gruesome revenge. Meanwhile, on the Pictured Rocks Indian Reservation, tribal elder and medicine man Archie Fayette is receiving mysterious drawings in the mail and seeing omens appear near his cabin: signs of a Wabeno, a witch trained in the ways of the ancient Society of the Dawn. Archie and his son, Matt, the reservation's overworked police chief, search to uncover the identity of the witch and their motivation for committing the brutal murders. Their investigation leads to the corrupted heart of Peter Dietrich's empire, revealing a secret buried deep beneath the reservation--a crime against the earth itself. As time draws short, Archie and Matt race to expose the truth and prevent Wabeno from committing one final, unspeakable act. The woods are lovely, dark and deep, and for millionaire industrialist Peter Dietrich, Wabeno has a sinister promise to keep.

Author Information

William (Bill) DeVlieger came to the Anishinabe Ojibway people as a student at Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin, where he received instruction in Native American Studies from tribal elders. Bill developed close friendships with Anishinabe Ojibway elders, teachers, activists, holy people, and people just living life, who taught him to think about the world in new ways. Learning about the Seventh Fire Prophecy, Bill recognized himself as one of the New People prophesied to lead humanity down the natural path to peace and sustainability. He attended native ceremonies, participating in talking circles, sweat lodges, shaking tents, and ceremonies at the Three Fires Midewiwin Grand Medicine Lodge, and participated in several environmental battles, fighting alongside the Anishinabe Ogitchida Warrior Society to protect the sacred lands and resources of the Northwoods. The author describes himself as one of the New People, a Seventh Fire Storyteller, a Celtic Druid, and son of Mother Earth.
