Overview

Bitburg - Daun - Gerostein - Kyll - Nims - Prüm - St.Vith - Wittlich The Eifel is a low mountain range between the cities of Aachen, Trier and Koblenz. In the east it extends to the rivers Rhine and Moselle, in the west it touches the borders of Luxembourg and Belgium. The Eifel is characterized by an extraordinary variety of landscapes. The Eifel National Park and the three areas designated as nature parks, Hohes Fagnes, Vulkaneifel and Südeifel, are particularly protected areas within the region. In the middle of the Eifel, the circular maars and the volcanic cones of the Vulkaneifel are fascinating, as are the juniper heaths and mineral springs. Deep river valleys, bizarre cliffs and even historic vineyards can be found in the southern hilly landscape. The Eifel is also extremely interesting in terms of cultural history, because the Celts and the Romans have already settled here and left their mark. There is a rich museum landscape in the region. With around 200 museums, the Eifel has one of the highest concentrations of museums in all of Europe. No less important is the number of castles and palaces, monasteries and churches. The following places are also worth seeing. the beer metropolis Bitburg, the climatic spa and Kneipp spa town of Daun, the fountain town of Gerolstein and Wittlich, which attracts thousands of guests to the town every year with the Säubrenner fair. Many of the well-developed cycle paths in the Eifel run on disused railway lines or along streams and rivers, often both. This enables relaxed cycling on many routes without having to climb every mountain, because tunnels and bridges of the former railway lines ensure small differences in height. Next to such family-friendly cycle paths - how could it be any different for a low mountain range! - as well as paths with constant ups and downs and athletically demanding routes with steep inclines. A particularly interesting combination is to cycle on the following cycle paths: in the first section you cycle on the Vennbahn cycle path, then change over to the Vennquerbahn to the Kyll cycle path and follow this to the Moselle. This 198-kilometer route takes you straight through the Eifel region, and with Aachen as the starting point and Trier as the destination, it also offers a connection between two cities that are well worth seeing.
