Author's Note: This is the story of my paternal grandfather's parents, Farid Abraão, who were Syrian immigrants to Brazil in 1920. My great-grandparents restarted everything from scratch, even their names and surnames were changed because it wasn't just a change of country, but a complete transformation of identity and culture. This story moves me, and I want to tell it forever. My great-grandfather's new name was Abraão Elias, which became the family's surname, which is why I'm called Mariana Abraão.
