OverviewThe German-born Philipp Franz von Siebold (1796-1866) was engaged as a physician on the artificial island of Deshima in Nagasaki harbour between 1823 and 1829. During his stay in Japan he collected many plant specimens, and his holdings of dried plants represented one of the earliest herbarium collections from Japan. They were an important source for the then newly described Japanese species. This collection is today housed in the Leiden branch of the National Herbarium of the Netherlands. Von Siebold and his successors also sent live plant specimens back to the Netherlands, and today many of these are well-known garden species. Fifteen specimens of the original collection are still flowering in Leiden's Botanical Garden. This CD-ROM provides an illustrated history of Von Siebold and his botanical collections. Examples of about 750 Japanese species are shown using herbarium information sheets from the Siebold collection, plates from his Flora Japonica, colour paintings by Kawahara Keiga, illustrated wood samples donated by Mogami Tokunai and photographs of live plants. Images of live plants originate from the Ibaraki Nature Museum, the slide collection of Bansei Makino, the Botanical Garden and the Von Siebold Memorial Garden. Also included is a map of the Botanical Garden which points out the location of the original von Siebold collection. Full Product DetailsAuthor: Ingrid de Kort , Jeannette W.A.
