Voices in the Dark: A Modern Morality Play

Overview

Voices in the Dark - A Modern Morality Play by Lusala Nzanza A lone Seeker wanders through silence, haunted by questions of faith, guilt, and responsibility. In a world scarred by war and abandonment, he confronts the voices of power, obedience, rebellion, and despair-each demanding to be heard, yet none offering certainty. At last, he faces the Wolf: death itself, majestic and inevitable. Between fragile faith and stark mortality, the Seeker must choose whether to remain silent or to act. Voices in the Dark is a daring reimagining of the medieval morality play for the modern age. Blending the timeless role of the Chorus with poetic dialogue and allegorical figures, Lusala Nzanza invites us into a theatre of conscience where the boundaries between inner turmoil and public struggle dissolve. The Seeker's journey reflects the crises of our time: wars justified as duty, the silenced poor and displaced, protests drowned out, institutions faltering, and a God who no longer speaks. With lyrical intensity and philosophical depth, Nzanza explores the central question of our age: When heaven is silent, whose voice will guide us? This is not mere theatre, but a confrontation with the choices that define us all. Can we bear witness? Can we resist despair? Can we act with courage, even in uncertainty? At once timeless and urgent, Voices in the Dark speaks to anyone who has wrestled with conscience in a fractured world. It is a meditation on silence and defiance, faith and mortality, responsibility and hope. More than a play, it is a call to reflection-one that lingers long after the final page, like voices echoing in the dark.

Author Information

Lusala Nzanza was born in 1990. He is an author, master's student, and former nursing professional. Raised in Zweibrücken, he studied Japanese Studies and Hispanic Studies at the University of Cologne and spent time abroad in Tokyo and Mexico. His professional experience ranges from intensive care to political education, legal counseling for refugees, and academic research in adult education. Nzanza was head of social affairs in the student union (AStA) at the University of Cologne, was active in the Refugee Law Clinic, and worked in various civil society projects addressing inclusion, intersectionality, and structural racism. His political engagement is always closely tied to the profound search for language: language as a tool of enlightenment, connection, resistance - and survival. As an author, he writes at the intersection of literature, social analysis, and lived experience. In his writing, he combines poetic reflection with intellectual depth and personal vulnerability. He deliberately experiments with literary forms - essay, poetry, monologue, fragment, inner dialogue - always seeking expression for what cannot be said. Nzanza lives and writes in Cologne.
