Vitamins and Neurodegeneration: Mechanisms and Therapeutic Insights

Overview

This book examines the neurobiological impact of vitamins in the pathophysiology and prevention of neurodegenerative diseases, offering an integrative perspective on nutritional modulation of brain health. It explores the antioxidant, anti‑inflammatory, and neurotrophic mechanisms of vitamins, alongside their pharmacokinetics, bioavailability, and blood–brain barrier transport. With a focus on age‑associated deficiencies, impaired absorption, and cognitive decline, it highlights mechanistic links between micronutrient status and neuronal integrity. It also investigates synergistic interactions with cofactor minerals, polyunsaturated fatty acids, and polyphenols, as well as the influence of gut microbiota on vitamin‑mediated neuroprotection. Specific emphasis is placed on the therapeutic implications of vitamins in Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Huntington’s disease, and multiple sclerosis (MS). Key Features: Explores the neuroprotective and cognitive benefits of essential vitamins, including A, C, E, B complex, D, and K Examines pharmacokinetics, bioavailability, and blood–brain barrier transport mechanisms relevant to vitamin efficacy Analyzes the epidemiology of vitamin deficiency, aging‑related malabsorption, and their link to cognitive impairment Highlights nutrient–nutrient and vitamin–drug interactions in neurological health and therapy Provides disease‑specific insights into the role of vitamins in Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, ALS, Huntington’s disease, and MS This book is intended for researchers and students of neuroscience and nutritional sciences.

Author Information

Sachchida Nand Rai is currently an assistant professor at the University Centre for Research & Development (UCRD), Chandigarh University, Mohali, Punjab, India. He earned his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from BHU in 2018. His research primarily focuses on the anti-Parkinsonian potential of medicinal plants such as Mucuna pruriens, Tinospora cordifolia, and Withania somnifera, as well as their bioactive constituents including ursolic acid, betulinic acid, and chlorogenic acid, particularly in toxin-induced Parkinsonian mouse models. Prior to his current role, Dr. Rai completed a 3-year postdoctoral fellowship at the Centre of Biotechnology, University of Allahabad, Prayagraj, from January 27, 2020, to January 26, 2023. He has made substantial contributions to neuroscience research, with numerous publications in high-impact journals. He serves as an academic editor and editorial board member for several reputed journals. Additionally, he is a member of the advisory board for Heliyon Neuroscience. His ongoing research investigates the neuroprotective effects of commonly used Indian medicinal plants in toxin-induced Parkinsonian models, aiming to uncover novel therapeutic strategies for neurodegenerative disorders.
