OverviewVirtuous Servant is the autobiography of Sarah Sheppard Andrews. In 1915, before women could even vote in the United States, the twenty-three-year-old Tennessee woman set sail for Japan to spread the Gospel--not yet knowing that the days ahead would bring bombings, house arrest, near starvation, persecution, loneliness, and illness. Hers is a unique story as stated in the inscription on her memorial in Numazu, For more than forty-five years she had loved Japan and the Japanese people, forgetting herself and living as a single person, suffering lifelong illnesses and inconveniences and living frugally on her own resources. Sarah Andrews established four Churches of Christ in Japan, one in Okitsu, Shizuoka, Shimizu, and one in Numazu, and led many Japanese followers to Christ. She served in devotion to those she taught and blessed, and her life continues to inspire new generations of missionaries.
