RHYS DAVIDS (1843-1922) was an English-born professor of Pali and co-founder of the London School for Oriental Studies. An authority on Buddhism, he wrote numerous scholarly articles and books on the subject. HERMANN OLDENBERG (1854-1920) was a German scholar and professor considered an expert in Buddhism and Hinduism. His book Buddha: his life, his doctrine, his order (1882) led to the popularization of Buddhism. F. MAX MÜLLER (1823-1900) was a German author and orientalist who lived in England most of his life. As a professor at Oxford, he combined the studies of language, culture, and religion to create the discipline of comparative mythology.
