After a successful career managing a family business involved in the production and distribution of educational programmes, he returned to the academic study of medieval history, which has been a lifelong interest. He was awarded an MA with Distinction in Medieval Studies at the University of Nottingham, and then completed his PhD at the University of East Anglia in 2020 on the Scandinavian place-names of East Anglia.
