Overview

Written around the ninth century, the Vijñânabhairava is a fundamental work in the development of Tantrism. The work presents the sapiential exchange between Bhairava, a form of the god Shiva, and his consort, the goddess Bhairavî. The god reveals a novel teaching that departs from the magical-ritualistic spirit of early Tantrism: what is essential is the kind of attention that the yogi can cultivate to make any object or situation a means of knowing the truth. The transgressive mood of tantra is thus expressed in the possibility of contemplatively reconfiguring any experience--including desire, finitude, and the forbidden--as the manifestation of a single energy. Cited by the great masters of our time, the Vijñânabhairava is a classic of Hindu spirituality, with a validity that goes beyond the cultural premises of India by offering the modern reader an inspiring analysis of the creative power of consciousness. The present translation, the first into Spanish directly from Sanskrit, is accompanied by an extensive study of the Tantric tradition, as well as an illuminating commentary.
