Willbanks is director of the Department of Military History at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas. He received his Ph.D. in history from the University of Kansas. Willbanks is a retired lieutenant colonel with 23 years of service as an infantry officer in various assignments, including a tour as an advisor with both the Royal Thai Army in Vietnam and the 18th Division of the Army of the Republic of Vietnam.
