OverviewThe Vietnam War saw the use of aircraft on an unprecedented scale. The helicopter particularly, came into its own use in a variety of roles. American airman fought bravely, often at the cost of their lives, whether bombing the North or South, directing artillery fire and bombers, flying fighter cover, rescuing downed aircrew or ground troops, airlifting men and cargo in dangerous areas or quietly resisting as prisoners of war. From official unclassified US government sources, Erhard Konerding, documents librarian at Wesleyan University, has researched, edited and included in the book over 25 rarely-told stories involving some of these aircraft and crews. Technical specifications and a photograph of the aircraft type involved in each story are included with the text.
