Chesterton said that a good religion can laugh at itself not a test that many would pass these days. Peter Reads Vicar Joe generally sticks to the home-grown humour of church and chapel (including the archetypal Welsh joke about the one I dont go to) and his collection should while away or perhaps improve a few dull sermons. (And theres hardly a football in sight). Some clever spoonerisms get in on the strength of Dr Spooner being a Rev. and there is a classic selection of epitaphs, as well as quite a few anecdotes which sound genuine and original, especially in the section on Baptism. Well, total immersion is asking for trouble! The humour is, on the whole, very gentle and the collectors have a delight in word-play try The Prodigal Son in the key of F on page 88. However, the Christian Chat-up Lines just might go down better in San Francisco than in Swansea. All in all, this is a handy, pocketful of laughs from Y Lolfa lush!
