Overview

The poetry of Gerhard Rudolf Schade was written between 1926 and the early 1980s. He focused on the immigrant experience as well as on the persons, places and considerations of a German in the United States. The poetry is regional, to the extent that Schade writes of his German homeland of Silesia and of his American homeland, New Hampshire. Author Information

The Author: Born in Silesia in 1906, Gerhard Rudolf Schade came to the U.S. in 1926. After receiving his M.A. from Columbia University, he became a German teacher at St. Paul's School, Concord, N.H. Until his retirement he wrote poetry, numerous volumes of diaries, newspaper articles - all championing German language and culture. For his many efforts, he was awarded the Bundesverdienstkreuz. His son, Richard E. Schade, who edited this book, is Professor of German at the University of Cincinnati.
