OverviewThe Reformation in the Netherlands went hand in hand with the Eighty Years War. Not only about denominational positions but also about territorial sovereignty was disputed. The resulting border region between north and south, which can be understood as a liminal space, was particularly vacant. In her art-historical study of the formation and dynamics of denominational identities, the author analyzes how belonging and difference were visually marked and staged. The volume chooses a cross-border approach and examines the visual strategies with which space was appropriated and coded. Space is not understood as a framework for denominational identity formation, but understood as a structure in which various parties negotiated and tried out denominational affiliation with which pictorial and spatial design means the respective confession could be expressed.
