Did romance influence a man's decision to go to war or his behaviour on the battlefield? How did women who were left behind or widowed cope without their loved ones? Couples were driven apart, their relationships strained by distance and infidelity. Lonely soldiers with limited leisure time resorted to superficial ""fast"" romance, including dalliances with prostitutes. Thousands of men never returned, and those who did were never the same. Author Information

Dan Azoulay, PhD, taught social, cultural, and political history at several Canadian universities for over 30 years. He is the author of two other books on romance history: Hearts and Minds: Canadian Romance at the Dawn of the Modern Era, 1900-1930 (2011) and Only the Lonely: Finding Romance in the Pages of Canada's Western Home Monthly, 1905-1924 (2000). As well, he is the author of Keeping the Dream Alive: The Survival of the Ontario CCF/NDP, 1950-1963 (1997) and the editor of Canadian Political Parties: Historical Readings (1999). He is retired and lives in Newmarket, Ontario.
