In this stimulating work S. R. Eyre, lecturer in geography at the University of Leeds, has given us both a creditable survey of the distribution and character of vegetations and soils around the world and an example of the application of a promising concept of plant-soil relationships to the theory of vegetation and soil development and to classification . . . Eyre has presented a rather ingenious method of relating vegetation, soils, and human history within a single study. --Philip L. Wagner, Geographical Review Although advertised as a supplementary text for introductory courses in botany and ecology, among others, this book's importance for botanists and plant ecologists is far greater. Within a small and readable compass it includes not only some basic information on the ecology of soils and vegetation in general but also a fresh, graphic, stimulating, and sometimes erroneous, systematic survey of the mode of functioning, the structure, composition, genesis, taxonomy, history, relationships to man and to environment of both soils and vegetation over the world's surface. --Jack Major, Ecology Dr. Eyre's World picture is the first British geographical text to deal with the world's biological resources for many years. It is a particular pleasure to be able to report that it is clear and lucid in its presentation of the essentially complex patterns of vegetation and soils and their distribution . . . This book is a valuable addition to the growing number of geographical texts at this level, and certainly merits shelf-space in university libraries and in schools which offer advanced courses in geography or biology. --H. J. R. Henderson, The Geographical Journal [This book is] the result of an immense amount of reading, and no other book is available in English or at a reasonable price which gives a short outline of either world vegetation or world soils . . .
