Walker, Language) This volume is a welcome addition to the small but growing body of interlanguage studies that use current sociolinguistic methods to examine variation in learner speech. The description of learner language that emerges is far richer than usually found in interlanguage studies. Young's study is an important contribution to our understanding of the nature of learner speech and the role of variation in SLA. (Robert Bayley, Studies in Second Language Aquisition) The presentation is clear and all difficult or unfamiliar terms are adequately adequate' representation of learners interlanguage than has previously been offered. ...the volume is of great benefit for linguists and people interested or involved in second language teaching. (Yousef Bader, International Review of Applied Linguistics in Language Teaching) ...a work that is not only instructive, but also thorough and interesting. One of the most valuable aspects of this book is the introduction to VARBRUL, the statistical analysis that Young uses in his study. This brief introduction is excellent for researchers who are unfamiliar with this program. (Susan M.
