Table of ContentsReviewsI saw a new dimension of Van Gogh and his genius when the author tells the story of him purchasing a mirror so that he could use himself as a model; he did this to save money; he had little of it. I was, also, impressed with information about the Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam, and the comments about impressionists: impressionist mixed colors on the canvas. I had not realized that Van Gogh experimented with a Japanese style. I realized that Van Gogh used many styles to express what he sensed, not only impressionism. I love Van Gogh's country side paintings. After reading the Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam and the explanations about these works, I found myself loving them even more. I was impressed with the information about the museums near the Van Gogh Museum. I am not a world traveler and have had no desire to visit the world since college. Reading the Van Gogh Museum has awakened a small desire to go visit this museum.- Barbara L. I found the book on the Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam to be interesting and informative. I especially like the fact that his actual works, especially his signature pieces in the Museum were presented and discussed. Van Gogh had a very short artistic life, but it was rich, varied and complex, as was he. After the succinct, place driven discussion of Van Gogh's life, I especially liked the information on his contemporaries. After all, each person (whether an artist or not) is using others in his or her world to enrich, distract, shape or otherwise forward the career. By presenting them as a unit within an artistic community, Van Gogh is given greater perspective and depth. This book gives a holistic rendering of the essential artwork of this important artist.- V.M. Ricks I bought this as a series of ebooks to prepare me for my upcoming trip to Amsterdam. This one is my favorite, since I feel a special connection to Van Gogh. While this book is definitely a great resource for the museum, I was pleasantly surprised at all the history and context included as well. For instance, this book discusses the Japanese influence on some of Van Gogh's work--something I have not read in other books on this artist. In addition, Van Gogh's contemporaries are also discussed. Even the smallest interesting facts--such as the meaning of almond blossoms as it relates to a painting Van Gogh did--are included. Along with maps and resources, the detailed information on Van Gogh in this book is invaluable. A definite must-have for those planning to visit this museum! - ShyGal Great guide on the famous Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam. I will be visiting Amsterdam soon and am now preparing my visit. I very much enjoyed reading this guide on Van Gogh, his life, and his most celebrated paintings. The book also contains a lot of information on paintings by his contemporaries like Seurat, Gauguin, Pissarro and Monet. So when I will be standing in front of the Sunflowers, the Potato Eaters or Vincent's own bedroom at the Yellow House I will not need any audio-guides and should be able to enjoy the beauty of the paintings even more! - Mandus Reading this book and going through each piece of art discussed makes me feel like I am already in the museum and exploring each and every one of those. If you are planning to go, reading this is a must so you are already familiar with Van Gogh's works and will get to enjoy them more. - Amie Cullen Author InformationTab Content 6Author Website:Countries AvailableAll regions |
