Abstract: Abstract of the thesis entitled Validation of dietary and physical activity measures in an older Chinese population submitted by DENG, Hanbing for the degree of Master of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in October 2007 Background: Inappropriate diet and physical inactivity are two major modifiable risk factors of chronic diseases, and consequently contribute to increases in morbidity, disability and premature death in both developed and developing countries. Most of the evidence on the effects of diet and physical activity are based on self-reported data. However, valid measurements of self-reported dietary intake and physical activity are very limited in Chinese populations, especially the elderly. Aim: The aim of the present study was to investigate the reliability and validity of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ) and a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ) in an older Chinese population. Methods: 224 older adults (66.1% women, 33.9% men, mean age 65.25.7 years) were randomly selected from the Guangzhou Biobank Cohort Study, a prospective cohort of older Chinese in Southern China. To examine the test-retest reliability, the participants completed the IPAQ-C twice within a 7-day interval. The criterion validity of the IPAQ-C was tested with pedometry. The reliability and validity of the FFQ was investigated in a sub-group of 108 participants (62.0% women, 38.0% men, mean age 65.75.6 years) by comparing the self-reported dietary intake with photographic dietary records. Results: For the IPAQ-C, good reliability was observed between the repeated administrations with intra-class correlation coefficients (ICC) ranging from 0.81 to 0.89. Total activity measured by IPAQ-C correlated moderately with the pedometer-measured steps (Partial r = 0.33 adjusted for sex, age and education, p The FFQ showed good consistency between two administrations of the questionnaire with high intra-class correlation coefficients ranged from 0.63 for nuts to 0.86 for refined grains (all p Conclusion: This is the first study to examine the reliability and validity of the IPAQ-C by pedometry, and to evaluate the reproducibility and relative validity of a FFQ and the photographic dietary records. Both the IPAQ-C and the newly developed FFQ were found to be adequately valid, reliable and accurate measures for assessing physical activity and diet in an urban older Chinese population. 1 DOI: 10.5353/th_b3955688 Subjects: Older people - Nutrition - Chna - GuangzhouPhysical fitness for older people - China - Guangzhou Full Product DetailsAuthor: Hanbing Deng , 鄧寒冰Publisher: Open Dissertation Press Imprint: Open Dissertation Press Dimensions: Width: 21.60cm , Height: 0.90cm , Length: 27.90cm Weight: 0.386kg ISBN: 9781361433027ISBN 10: 1361433027 Publication Date: 27 January 2017 Audience: General/trade , General Format: Paperback Publisher's Status: Active Availability: Temporarily unavailable The supplier advises that this item is temporarily unavailable.
