A practical guide to managing your hormones controlling everything from mood to sexual function Although usually I prefer well referenced books in order to research underlying science, this one fulfilled its mission in providing a practical guide as to how your Vagus nerve impacts so many aspects of your well-being, from managing stress and anxiety to improving your immune system and reducing a whole range of inflammatory illnesses from arthritis to inflammatory bowel diseases like Crohn's and Colitis. The role the Vagus nerve plays in balancing the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems, that is 'fight or flight' mode versus 'rest and digest', is adequately explained. The mechanism of action of the vagus nerve, providing feedback to your brain-stem from your heart, lungs, spleen and most organs, illustrates its importance, as well as mechanisms to stimulate it. The fact that the vagus nerve controls release of hormones involved in everything from sexual function, like oxytocin, to acetylcholine involved in inflammatory response, provides us with a 'self help' book to try to manage our bodies better without always relying on pharmacology.
