Clemens, a Sociologist of Education, is an Assistant Professor of Administrative and Instructional Leadership at St. John′s University′s School of Education. His research pertains to three major themes: First, he examines the social and cultural contexts of education. In particular, he focuses on how growing up in low-income neighborhoods affects college access. Second, he explores the role of qualitative research to inform public policy. Third, he investigates innovative uses of social media to conduct and share qualitative research. Current projects include a multi-year ethnographic study of teenagers living in the largest housing project in Brooklyn as well as Using Social Media for Qualitative Research, a book that introduces readers to the emerging role of social media for qualitative research. Recent publications include (with W. G. Tierney), `Qualitative Research and Public Policy: The Challenges of Relevance and Trustworthiness,’ and (with W. G. Tierney), `The Uses of Life History’. Before joining the faculty at St. John′s, Randy conducted research at the University of Southern California′s Pullias Center for Higher Education and taught English at a high school near the nation′s capital.
