Thomas Stearne Eliot (1988-1965) was born in St. Louis. Missouri, U.S. A descendant of the old New England family, he graduated in Philosophy at the Sorbonne, Harvard and Merton College, Oxford. He settled in England where he taught at a junior school for boys near London, and then worked for Lloyd's Bank as a clerk, before he took up the assignment of editor for Faber & Faber. Later he became a director of this publishing firm.While teaching, Eliot completed his dissertation ""Knowledge and Experience in the Philosophy of F.H. Bradley."" But he did not return to the U.S. to defend it, though the dissertation was accepted.In 1927, Eliot became a British citizen and entered the Anglican Church in the same year.A poet, playwright, literary critic, editor and publisher he is arguably one of the greatest writers of the twentieth century.
