OverviewThe objective of this symposium is to present the worldwide situation of Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage (SMES). Present and future requirements and measures for energy storage in electrical networks are outlined. Existing facilities, design studies, and development programmes for SMES are reported and potential application areas are described. Future prospects of SMES are discussed taking into account the impact of High Temperature Superconductivity.
