Overview

Online sex trafficking is a global problem and requires cooperation and coordination among governments, tech companies, civil society, and survivors. The rise of the Internet and mobile phone usage can work in support of sex traffickers, helping them to keep a low profile and facilitating human trafficking rings on a global scale—especially for commercial sex exploitation, where sex traffickers use the Internet as a tool to target vulnerable women and children. However, online outreach and social media are also critical to combating and preventing sex trafficking. The Internet fuels anti-trafficking measures by raising awareness, mobilizing advocacy, and strengthening programs, as well as providing victims with access to information about rehabilitation and reintegration services. Based on the theoretical and empirical evidence from Northeast India, Use of Social Networking Technology in Sex Trafficking leads the way to comprehend the need for further research on technology security in the fight against sex trafficking.

"""Although human trafficking for sexual exploitation is an age-old challenge, its modalities and dynamics are always evolving. This excellent book, written by a leading scholar in the field, explores how online social networking plays an important role in this scourge. It demonstrates how these technologies are opening up new opportunities for abuse, and the difficulties of detection and intervention. It also presents some very interesting implications for better regulation and for using technology to combat trafficking."" --Edward Newman, University of Leeds ""In an era when the internet and other modern technological advances, including social networking, have become omnipresent, there remain notable gaps in our understanding of and response(s) to how criminal elements are exploiting such technology to the demise of--in the case of this book--victims of sex trafficking. In addition to covering several of the more 'harmful' (new) technologies, Sarkar offers a range of evidence-informed suggestions to combat sex trafficking and human trafficking in general. This timely and informative book is a welcome addition to the burgeoning discourse on the impact of modern technology on sex trafficking and how such technology can also be used to combat sex trafficking."" --John Winterdyk, Mount Royal University"

What makes this study important is the amount of field research that was accomplished by the team of researchers, including interviews with victims, perpetrators, and law enforcement in three states in northeast India."" --Mitchel P. Roth, Sam Houston State University ""There is broad agreement that human trafficking, and especially sex trafficking, should be countered and prevented. It is a global problem due to the widespread use of internet and information technologies. This book provides excellent insight into the extent and nature of the problem but also demonstrates what can be done to mitigate and prevent it, particularly by using technology as a key tool. It is fascinating reading."" --Hank ten Have, Duquesne University and Anahuac University ""With the internet and other modern technological advancements, such as social networking, now being ubiquitous, there are still significant gaps in our understanding of and response to how criminals exploit these technologies to the detriment of sex trafficking victims, as highlighted in this book. Alongside discussing various 'harmful' emerging technologies, Sarkar provides evidence-based recommendations to combat sex trafficking and human trafficking as a whole. This book, which is both timely and informative, contributes greatly to the ongoing conversation about the influence of modern technology on sex trafficking and its potential for combating this issue."" --John Winterdyk, Mount Royal University"
