Author Information

Karim Ismaili is Vice Provost and Professor of Criminology at Bridgewater State University. He is a Senior Fellow of the Vincentian Center for Social Justice at St. John's University, an affiliate of the Center for Excellence in Research on Immigration and Settlement (CERIS), and a member of the Ryerson University Law Research Center.Born and raised in London, England, Karim emigrated with his family to Vancouver, Canada as a teenager. After completing his B.A. in criminology at Simon Fraser University, he returned to England and completed an M.Phil. in criminology at the University of Cambridge. He then went on to study political science at the University of Western Ontario. His doctoral dissertation explored the criminal justice policy-making process and drew on three years of participant observational research conducted in the Ministry of the Solicitor General Canada and Department of Justice Canada.Prior to his appointment as Vice Provost, Karim served as Dean of the College of Graduate Studies at Bridgewater State (2013-2014). He has held professorships at Kennesaw State University in Metropolitan Atlanta, where he also served as Associate Dean in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences (2010-2013); at Ryerson University in Toronto (2006-2010), where he was the Inaugural Chair of the Department of Criminal Justice and Criminology; at St. John’s University in New York City (1997-2006), and at Radford University in Virginia (1996-1997). He has also served as a visiting professor of Behavioral Science at the New York Police Academy.Karim's areas of teaching, research and publishing include criminal justice policy and analysis, penology, criminological theory, crime and inequality, and post 9/11 crime and security developments. He is the recipient of numerous teaching awards and has been interviewed by news outlets that include WNYC (New York Public Radio), WBEZ (Chicago Public Radio), TVOntario, and The New York Times.
