This book is about three different types of continuity from historic precedent to current practice in the field of urban planning and particularly that of urban design.The book begins by defining, describing and analyzing the three forms, which are:• Urban conservation,• Cultural tourism, and• Permanencies or Persistencies of Form.The book cites examples of each such case which the author worked on. Author Information
John Yarwood graduated in Architecture from the University of Edinburgh and in Urban and Regional Planning from the University of Sheffield. His doctoral thesis concerned Islamic Urbanism. After an early career in local government, he was Head of Architecture at Telford New Town Development Corporation for six years. After two years as Head of Urban Renewal in the Ministry of Housing in Bahrain, he worked as a consultant in Turkey, the Philippines, Kuwait, Jamaica, Dubai, Germany, Finland, Britain, Russia, Poland, China, Ireland, Bosnia-Hercegovina, the UAE, Sudan, Afghanistan and Albania. He has worked for the EC, the EU, and the World Bank, subsequently working as an academic for University College Dublin, and currently is working for Kuwait Municipality. He was awarded an MBE for his work in Bosnia. His last two books, firstly on Urban Planning after War, Disaster and Disintegration and secondly on Urban Planning in the Middle East, were published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. He is a Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society.
