It's a definitive blueprint of masterful storytelling about Black culture. In the gallery of poetic passages, I found myself immersed in a maze of wonderment reminiscent of a mahogany museum. Hypothetically, if such a museum exists, this book would represent the map of hidden treasures. Author Chyrel Jackson proves once again why she is a premier modern-day poet and this book, along with her previous acclaimed works with her sister Lyris, will undoubtedly be included as a collector series for serious poet enthusiasts. This is an exceptional piece of work! As a Southerner who was raised in the Midwest, I felt the down-home charm with many pieces like N'awlins Jazz Piping, Evolution of the Blues, Leave me Alone with my Blues, and Harold's Chicken with a side of Black Culture, just to name a small few are downright jaw dropping and thought-provoking. Then, there are spiritual passages like Walking as Servants and A Joyful People will put an eternal stamp on your soul, but Suffering in Silence made me tear up because it made me reflect on past traumas that were still unresolved. There's a stroke of genius in every single poetic expression; I'm just pointing out some select ones, but the entire book is a masterwork that left a profound impression on me. With Unsung Canaan Ballads, I can safely acknowledge that Chyrel Jackson is todays Maya Angelou, and if Miss Angelou were still present today, she would proudly place Chyrel Jackson in that Mt. Rushmore of elite Black Women poets. As a fellow author, I'm simply amazed and inspired by SistersRocNRhyme's contributions as artists and fundamental insight into the plight of the Black community. Give 'em hell, sister Chyrel, give 'em hell. You inspire us all! Author Juntu Ahjee Unsung Canaan Ballads is a monumental unwavering account of inconvenient truth-Good. Bad. Ugly. Darkness took Chyrel J. Jackson deep inside her soul where the music lives. She emerged resolute and emboldened, pen in hand, insisting that her presence and voice be acknowledged. Her Chicago South Side upbringing and rich heritage cannot be ignored. Her desire for a safe and just existence cannot be ignored. Her extensive knowledge of Black literature and love of Black music cannot be ignored. Filled with anthems of robust reckoning, this is one of the most stirring poetry collections of our time. Through her own vulnerability, Jackson invites readers to experience the transformative potential of poetry-how it heals, liberates, and celebrates. This treasury of unsung ballads will endure, providing insight for readers now and in the future. Poet Chyrel J. Jackson will be remembered long after we are gone. Zaneta V.
