OverviewGonorrhea is a sexually transmitted infection that can be transmitted through sexual contact. In males, the infection primarily targets the urethra, while in females, it commonly affects the urethra and cervix, or both. Additionally, the infection can spread to the rectum, anus, throat, and pelvic organs. In very rare instances, it may even affect the eyes. Timely treatment is crucial when dealing with gonorrhea. If left untreated, the infection can result in severe complications. In women, untreated gonorrhea can progress to the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries, leading to the development of painful scar tissue and inflammation known as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). PID can further result in infertility or ectopic pregnancy.
