Overview

Issued on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the Commission, this brochure highlights its many achievements. Established in 1947 the Commission's first concerns were to ensure professionalism and integrity in the national and international statistical services and to focus on the pressing issues of the development of statistical standards and methods and the dissemination of available international statistics in world recovering from global warfare.As the post-war recovery period turned into a time of growth and prosperity, the Commission took up new challenges. In the present era there is the need for the development for truly global economic statistics and improved coverage and greater detail on the rapidly emerging international service sector. No less important and requiring considerable innovation beyond the traditional methods and subjects familiar to official statisticians, is the need to develop tools for measuring the interaction and balance of economic development and the environment, the changes in the global economy, which is becoming increasingly borderless, and the changing definition of progress.
