OverviewIn June 2002, more than five hundred people from all over Australia gathered in Melbourne to honour the memory of Eddie Mabo and to consider the 'unfinished business' that continues ten years after the Mabo decision. 'Unfinished Business' is the record of the conference. It contains the addresses and contributions of key speakers and commentators as they reflected on the objectives of the conference: - To observe the Mabo decision as an opportunity to stimulate widespread community discussion and thought on the future shape of Australia's cultural identity in relation to Indigenous and non-indigenous people; - To provide a forum where indigenous people could address the nation; - To bring together Australians from a variety of community, political, and social settings to invigorate and stimulate the public exploration of issues of identity and race in our nation; - To promote an understanding that the so called 'unfinished business' is an issue for all Australians, no just Indigenous Australians; - To raise the political profile of relationships between indigenous and non-indigenous Australians, among Australians generally, but also the political parties that govern this land; - To acknowledge the true historical journey of Australia, and the place that race and skin colour has played in access to power and resources; and - To develop further the national understanding of how the Mabo decision has influenced the social, legal and spiritual landscape of Australia.
