Overview

We're used to assuming that politics stop at the classroom door. Those days are over. Are your kids being indoctrinated in school? Unfortunately, it's increasingly likely. From social justice to critical race theory, and from advocacy and activism campaigns to planned action weeks, teachers and schools nationwide are abandoning neutrality in the classroom, embracing political agendas and partisan aims, and expecting students to get on board. Bonnie Snyder, DEd, is Director of High School Outreach at the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education--a nonpartisan nonprofit whose mission is to defend constitutional freedoms on campus--and a former teacher, counselor, and professor. John McWhorter teaches linguistics, Western civilization, music history, and American studies at Columbia University. His books on language include Nine Nasty Words; The Power of Babel; Our Magnificent Bastard Tongue; Words on the Move; Talking Back, Talking Black; and The Creole Debate. He is also a TED speaker, a columnist for CNN.com, a regular contributor to The Atlantic, a frequent guest on CNN and MSNBC, and the host of Slate's language podcast, Lexicon Valley. Pamela Almand, a former international 747 pilot for Delta Airlines, launched an unlikely second career after appearing in a national television spot for Tylenol in 1995. Several regional spots for Northwest Airlines followed, and she began narrating training and industry videos, built a professional recording studio, and launched the Captain's Voice. Since then, Pamela has provided voice-over for major corporate clients worldwide, including Microsoft, Disney, Canadian Realtors, the United Nations, Zurich, International Red Cross, and the hotels and casinos of Monte Carlo. She is a SAG/AFTRA voice actor and audiobook narrator with multiple awards and nominations from the Audio Publishers Association's Audie Awards, Society of Voice Arts and Sciences' Voice Arts Awards, and AudioFile magazine's Earphones Award. She lives in Atlantic Beach, Florida, with her husband, Amos.
