Overview

Admired all over the world and loved by locals for its natural beauty, Sydney Harbour is enjoyed by thousands of people every day. But rarely do we look below the surface where, beneath all the hustle and bustle, lively communities go about their business. With underwater forests and gardens, hundreds of species of fish and thousands of invertebrates, Sydney is as colourful and diverse below the water as it is above! Underwater Sydney celebrates Sydney's incredible harbour and coast through eclectic stories and stunning underwater photography. It also explores the challenges the harbour is facing today after more than 200 years of coastal development, and the role that marine science plays in maintaining the harbour's health. Underwater Sydney will open your eyes to the rich marine life that makes the Sydney estuary and coast so special.

Reviews

Underwater Sydney is a coffee table book in the best sense - written for a lay audience, but not lacking in scientific rigour. It would be equally at home on display or in the side pocket of your ute as a pre-snorkel reference guide. -- Emily Jateff * Signals 128, Spring 2019, magazine of the Australian National Maritime Museum * Not only do they [the authors] show how the unique 'drowned river valley' environment of Sydney Harbour fosters extraordinary biodiversity, they also provide a visual feast of native marine wildlife. This is a book that will positively change the way you look at Sydney, forever. * Wildlife Australia, Summer *

Author Information

Inke Falkner is a marine ecologist who focuses on creative science and environmental education. In her role as Community Outreach Coordinator at the Sydney Institute of Marine Science, she developed a marine science program for primary and high school students focusing on Sydney Harbour. She also curated the content for the Institute’s Discovery Centre and ran educational harbour cruises and foreshore walks featuring the underwater world of Sydney Harbour. Having moved to the Southern Tablelands, NSW, she now works as a freelance science communicator. John Turnbull is a marine ecologist, social scientist and passionate underwater photographer. John has dived extensively in Sydney Harbour and along the coastline and knows the inhabitants of these waters extremely well. His delightful and exciting photographs bring this book to life. A few years ago, John traded a life in the business sector to pursue his passion for marine conservation, and he is currently researching the relationship between humans, nature and stewardship of the marine environment at the University of New South Wales.
