He was born in San Francisco, California, graduated from Fryeburg Academy in 1994 and attended school at the Institute of Culinary Education. He worked under Jean-Jacques Timon at New York's Basque Corner, and then moved to Europe to work at several restaurants there. He returned to the United States at age 25 and served as the executive chef of the Italian/American restaurant California Pasta Grill in Santa Rosa, California. On May 02, 2003, Duff released his first cookbook Happy hour: 200 Recipes from My Kitchen to Yours, which features 200 elevated traditional recipes designed for the home cook. He married his first wife, Lisa Jude, on August 31, 2004. They met in 1995 at University: Lisa helped open the restaurant and served as its first dining room manager and wine and beverage director until the couple divorced in August 2010.
