Overview

In Understanding Physical and Chemical Changes, a science unit for grades 6-8, students work to understand the concepts and definitions of physical and chemical change. The unit pays particular attention to highlighting the indicators of these changes, which students employ to develop data collection tables to use in the experimental phase. In a culminating authentic project, lab teams are challenged to design their own experiments that illustrate a physical or chemical change.

Richard G. Cote, M.B.A., is a career educator. He has dedicated 41 years to being a classroom teacher (mathematics, physics), a community college adjunct instructor (economics), a gifted and talented resource specialist, and the director of the Further Steps Forward Project, funded under Javits legislation. Darcy Blauvelt joined the Nashua School District in 2005 as a gifted and talented resource specialist. Subsequently, she served full time as the program coordinator for the Further Steps Forward Project, a Javits Grant program, from 2005-2009. Blauvelt returned to the classroom in the fall of 2009 and currently teaches seventh grade English in Nashua, NH. Blauvelt lives in Manchester, NH with her husband, two dogs, five cats, and the occasional son!
