Under Torn Paper Mountains

Overview

This is an adventure story in its own peculiar way, a novelization of true stories, a small portion of the early years of a life of wanderings and musings and pain and passion in the southwestern deserts, and there were a few hard lessons learned along the way. This story is not a suggestion for others to follow, but a few nuggets may lie among the slag heaps and ruins left behind. And most of it is true. The time frame is the 1960s and 70s. The protagonist is a young man growing up in the Southwest at the time of the Viet Nam war, the birth of the hippie generation and the attendant idealism and hope for social transformation.

Reviews

Perry's book...has stunned me at every turn. From the history to the depths of emotion to his beautiful metaphors and descriptions and history. -Suzanne Maxwell ...enjoyed your book. I loved your transparency and humor. I had to laugh when your Dad told you to put a mat at your door so people could wipe their feet on the way out. -Judy Kidd Bravo! Well done. I finished reading your book and was left wanting more. -Bill Kidd Fine job in capturing your tumultuous passage into adulthood. What a dynamic time. The book is finely written, hooking the various stories together is well done and keeps the interest up as to what's next. -Gary Kirk I thoroughly enjoyed your new book. Amazing imagery, and a compelling story. What adventures you have had! Thanks for taking us on that journey with you! -Ken Newell ...beautifully written and inherently interesting book.... It was such a fascinating reminder of those times of dissent, social revolution and unrest, as well as the opening of minds from new ideas music, and sundry psychotropic pharmaceuticals. Brilliant. I also loved the way Perry wove into his tale, so much history of New Mexico and other places. -Ross Coleman ...write to say how much I liked it-the New Mexico details and history, the great depiction of the era and most of all the landscape and climate that you made come alive. It seemed like an odyssey back and forth in time, as well as to and fro to from Albuquerque to Mexico. It was a good vehicle - literally. Much to my surprise I particularly liked the Marines part, especially the training exercise where you had to make your way to shore with the rest of the bozos.... The hitchhiking, the sleeping out in the open, all the musing, mulling over the details of Annie- it all seemed like the kind of obsessions that afflicted young adults of that era, and I bet lots of people will be able to relate. -Dede Feldman I'm getting into your book. Page turner! -Todd Tibbals ...so far I've got the shaggy hippie to St. Louis - and I'm thoroughly enjoying his journey! Love the way you're handling the flashbacks...wonderful writing! -Carolyn Meyer
