They include a family of slaves entering Canada and re-establishing themselves among the Canadian landscapes; only to struggle for equality in a new land. The novel covers the internment of the Japanese Canadians; those who were forcibly relocated and interned, so as to protect a nation in turmoil and tells of a Japanese fisherman, stricken by loss. The novel follows the discovery of a First Nations boy, who escapes an Island full of horrors, with connections to the residential schools. In between the various cultures are two best friends, each who are struggling for their own identities among tragedies and whose worlds are unknowingly linked to each character.
