Overview

In this fast-paced memoir, Elise Krentzel shares how she took charge of the tumultuous 1970s by making a name for herself as a rock journalist. As a kid, her parents encouraged her to sing, play music, and write, but she wasn't allowed to be ""herself."" Alienated, she hid her heart and learned to become a stranger in her skin as the torment of early childhood taught her to mistrust everyone, especially herself. As an adolescent traveling in Europe, she realized there was more to life than sex, money, and fame. With newly instilled vigor and drive, Elise set out to break her toxic cycles, determined to become someone people would notice. At 19 years old-the youngest journalist on the KISS Japan Tour-she negotiated a plum job with one of the most prominent players in the Japanese music industry, desperately trying to fill the gaping hole left by feeling unheard and unloved by those she depended on most: her family. Spanning three continents and twenty years, Under My Skin tells the story of a street-smart, vulnerable Jewish girl from the Bronx and how she changed her life forever.

Reviews

Under My Skin will transport you to a different time in our culture, when rules seemed made for the breaking and an open heart, an untamed spirit, and sheer determination could take you safely to the other side of the world and back. A mind-blowing read about a young girl's journey through adolescence and the rock 'n' roll world of the 1970s. -Marli Higa, Research and Copy Chief, Women's Health Magazine The 1970s music scene in Japan was a hotbed for experimentation. We couldn't get enough Western bands from the UK and USA. Elise was at the forefront of this scene, a trendsetter and fearless young woman who forged ahead, despite her age, gender and the cultural barriers she struggled with. This book is for anyone who grew up then and for those who wish they were there. -Yuki Watanabe, CEO of YWA Music & Former Owner of Mars nightclub As a musician and NYC club owner, I spent my life hobnobbing with celebrities and rockers-KISS, Aerosmith, Peter Frampton, Guns N' Roses, Bon Jovi, and more. Elise's story brings alive the mayhem and wonder of the music scene, as seen through the eyes of a spunky, vibrant young girl finding her way through the maze of the rock 'n' roll world of the 1970s. A fascinating must-read. -Nicki Camp
