Clarkson is a professor and holder of the Ovintiv/Shell Chair in Unconventional Gas and Light Oil Research in the Department of Geoscience and an adjunct professor with the Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering at the University of Calgary. He leads the industry- and government-sponsored Tight Oil Consortium, which focuses on advanced reservoir characterization and evaluation of unconventional light oil reservoirs. Clarkson holds a PhD in geological engineering from the University of British Columbia.
