Overview

In late May 1886, Tony Visinet departed for a month-long trip to the United States. He discovered a country in the midst of transformation. As well as being hosted at the White House by President Cleveland, Visinet's trip also included a visit to the slaughterhouses of Chicago. His account also describes social tensions, including a strike in New York, along with racial tensions, which were still running high in the wake of the Civil War.
