OverviewUmbilical cord procidence, an unpredictable accident during labor, continues to have a dreadful fetal prognosis, despite recent advances in diagnosis and treatment. The aim of this study is to determine the frequency of umbilical cord procidence, its etiological factors, to evaluate the fetal prognosis and the therapeutic and preventive means. This is a retrospective study over two years (January 1, 2011 to December 31, 2013) carried out in the Gynecology-Obstetrics Department of the Panzi General Referral Hospital. Epidemiological, clinical, therapeutic and evolutionary parameters were collated and analyzed using Excel 2010.Out of a total of 6795 deliveries performed, 68 cases of umbilical cord procidence were found, representing a frequency of 1%. 75.3% of multiparous parturients were found. 68.8% of newborns were male. Vicious presentations accounted for 22% of all deliveries, dominated by breech presentations. Prematurity was found in 13.2% of cases, and twinhood in 13.2%. Cord procidence is usually diagnosed at rupture of the membranes.
