OverviewTypee is the first book by the famous American writer Herman Melville. First published in 1846, the book is today considered a classic in travel literature and adventure. The story is based on real experiences by the author as a prisoner in 1842 on the Island Nuku Hiva, located on the Marquesas Islands in the South Pacific, which is generously complemented with imaginative adaptation of material from other books. The title of the novel is the name of a valley called Tai Pi Vai. Typee was the most popular work of Melville during his life and he became known as the ""man who lived among cannibals."" Omoo is the second book by Herman Melville, first published in 1847 and a sequel to Typee. After leaving the island of Nuku Hiva, the main character embarks on a whaling ship that goes all the way from Tahiti, after which there is a riot and most of the crew is imprisoned.
