TWYLA - The Early Years: (1903-1926)

Overview

A Journey Through Adversity and Triumph: The Life of a Resilient Woman Who Overcame Polio, Embraced Education, and Found Joy in Nature, Music, and Community, All While Navigating the Challenges of Health and Life in Rural America and Beyond. In TWYLA - The Early Years, Twyla Gilkey Isett shares her extraordinary journey from a small Iowa town to a life rich with experiences. Born in 1903, she faced the challenges of polio at a young age, yet her spirit remained unbroken. With a love for reading ignited early on, she immersed herself in literature, exploring the classics before even reaching high school. Her Nebraska years were filled with vivid memories of prairie fires and Indian Powwows, while her time in southeastern Ohio saw her organizing music circuits through harsh weather. Despite her health struggles, Twyla's determination to connect with others and pursue her passions shines through. She reflects on the beauty of nature, the power of community, and the importance of hard work. Her story is a testament to resilience, illustrating how love, education, and a deep appreciation for life can weave together a rich tapestry of experiences. This memoir invites readers to celebrate the strength of the human spirit and the joy found in life's simple pleasures.

Author Information

John Steffa met Twyla Gilkey Isett during a visit to Columbus Junction, Iowa, as a teenager. He referred to her as Aunt Twyla, later discovering she was his first cousin, once removed. Twyla, who contracted polio in childhood, became a multifaceted individual-an artist, poet, teacher, musician, and ultimately the administrator of Restopia, a rest home for the elderly. Her memoir, written during her time at Restopia, was passed down through family members, including her son, Lynn Gilkey, and Steffa's father. In this book, TWYLA - The Early Years, Steffa presents the first part of her remarkable life story.
