Overview

In a Polish forest a young woman befriends a boar. An Englishman sets up home with two beavers in Saskatchewan. A zoologist watches a fish make a conscious decision. Darwin finds the evidence for evolution in the backyards of pigeon fanciers. The entire population of Croatia anxiously awaits the arrival of a single stork. Animals have shaped our lives, our land, our civilisation, and they will shape our future. Yet as our impact on the world and the animals we share it with increases, there has never been a greater urgency to understand this foundational relationship.Beastly is the 40,000-year story of animals and humans as it has never been captured before, seen eye-to-eye and claw-to-hand through those humans who have stepped into the myriad worlds of our animal relatives. Our relationship with animals has always been paradoxical, but the greatest paradox may yet be this: diversity of life can heal ecosystems. Animals - if given the chance - could save us.

What a wonderful and unexpected book. The very opposite of beastly: heavenly and amazing, powerful and affecting, a beloved and very fine teller of tales reminds us how small we are in the face of a nature that we neither understand nor wish to respect or, in any real sense, live with -- PHILIPPE SANDS Full of necessary rage, joy and passion: Beastly should be mandatory reading for all humans -- CLAIRE FULLER [An] entertaining and mind-expanding book so full of surprising facts and fascinating stories that my copy has practically every page folded down or highlighted or annotated with exclamation marks. Keggie's writing makes me laugh but it also makes me think; the perfect combination. Beastly is a brilliant book for anyone who questions how we might live more ethically, more harmoniously and more happily alongside the other creatures in this crowded and beautiful world -- CAL FLYN Moving, poignant yet funny. A charmingly eccentric exploration of our increasingly dysfunctional relationship with nature, peppered with peculiar, remarkable tales both joyous and sad -- DAVE GOULSON Wondruous true stories of kinship between humans and our fellow creatures . . . [An] impassioned account about the ways in which wild animals have shaped, and will continue to shape, our lives, particularly in the teeth of the climate emergency -- CAROLINE SANDERSON * * Bookseller * * Praise for Keggie Carew: A rare blend of wit, warmth, zany fizz and plain honesty -- RACHEL JOYCE This is an unexpected and unusual treat: feels like a breath of fresh air . . . This is laugh-out-loud, delightful comedic writing . . . More Keggie, please -- VIV GROSKOP * * Observer * * Hilariously, toe-curlingly relatable . . . a joyous burst of authenticity * * Mail on Sunday * * OH THIS BOOK. Beautiful and fierce and brave. Memory and war and family and loss and, well, wow -- HELEN MacDONALD Carew is a natural storyteller * * Guardian * *

I loved it. I really did -- RACHEL JOYCE

Praise for Quicksand Tales: I don't know how she does it but Keggie has the ability to take the sideways moments in life, and paint them with such humour and folly and awfulness I go from snort-out-loud laughing to wonder. Here is a collection of tales of mistakes that verge from terrifying to everyday but told once again with Keggie's rare blend of wit, warmth, zany fizz and plain honesty -- RACHEL JOYCE This is an unexpected and unusual treat: a funny and clever collection of non-fiction stories that feels like a breath of fresh air . . . This is laugh-out-loud, delightful comedic writing. It captures a mood of escapism and nostalgia that I found incredibly reassuring and cheering. More Keggie, please -- VIV GROSKOP * * Observer * * Hilariously, toe-curlingly relatable . . . a joyous burst of authenticity * * Mail on Sunday * * Carew is a natural storyteller, and each of these tales works like a perfectly paced standup routine, punctuated by some gorgeous phrase-making . . . It's hard to make writing look this easy, but Carew's stories have the knack of easing the reader happily from page to page, leaving us squirming at the situations she finds herself in while secretly hoping that she won't escape them just yet * * Guardian * * Wonderfully written, very funny and full of life -- ROGER DALTREY Carew excel[s] at pinpointing the disjointedness between the life we boast about and the messy lives we actually end up living * * Sunday Times * * Keggie Carew really has a knack for stepping in it, boy. But the further you wade in with her, the more hilarious, and poignant, it all becomes. Quicksand Tales is a tonic for the tortured and cursed -- JOSHUA FERRIS I loved it. Keggie is chaos in motion, yearning for everything to go right and, luckily for us, it rarely does. She has a wonderfully sharp eye for character, draws every scene so vividly and it's funny, witty. Never arch. Funny. And awful -- ROBERT BATHURST Keggie Carew blazes a trail for the more earthbound and hapless among us in her brilliant and hilarious Quicksand Tales * * Sunday Express * * Charming . . . Carew has a beautifully evocative style * * Evening Standard * *
