Overview

Surrounded by the natural beauty of the Val Trebbia in the Italian Apennines, and immersed in the richness of the traditions of its inhabitants, two men struggle to give meaning to the changes that the dramatic events of their age precipitate. Taking opposite sides, they live through the hopes and lies of the 1930s, try to make sense of a lost war, fight for freedom and dignity, and learn to live with their disappointment at the attitudes of the liberators. What is ethics and morality and how should they be pursued? What is the role of one's heritage and traditions? The novel is a factual puzzle woven into a fictional narrative. Fictional characters move in a carefully researched social context, interact with people who really existed and participate in the actual events that took place in the valley and in Italy during the period 1920-1955.
