Overview
In February 1974, Jan and Ian Mitchell, cruising novices, set off to circumnavigate the world in their Top Hat 25 foot yacht, Caprice. Many adventures later, they returned to Sydney in November 1977, with two-year-old Jamie (born in Durban, South Africa) and Jan pregnant with their second son. Four and a half months later, David was born. Ian looked after the children while Jan wrote articles for yachting magazines. She also wrote the cover story for an August edition of Women's Day. This book contains a compilation of those fourteen articles plus one from Ian about their shakedown voyage, published in Australian Sailing. Jan has added many more photographs of their trip and a history of the Top Hats. The Mitchells write about seasickness, gales, learning to navigate, coping with strong currents, repairing a rigging failure at sea, friendships with others in the cruising community, the joys of tropical islands and more. These articles were widely read in 1978 and inspired many would-be sailors to buy a boat. Some set out to sail the world. We hope their story will inspire you too.

A first-class, well-written book by people who dared to sail around the world in a 25-foot boat. 'Two in a Top Hat' is easy to read, informative and should provide inspiration to those who aspire to travel the globe in a small boat. The book is also a testament to the Top Hat, a diminutive, GRP constructed full keel sailing yacht with the inherent strength to tackle the world's oceans. Highly recommended. Jan Mitchell moved from New Zealand to live in Australia in 1970. Since her twenties, Jan has written magazine stories about her sailing adventures, having been published in Personality (South Africa), Cruising World (USA), Australian Sea Spray, Cruising Helmsman, Australian Sailing and Woman's Day. Her other non-fiction books are tinker tailor, soldier, sailor...the life of Colin Kerby OAM, Crossings in Realitas and Hear the Ocean Sing. The latter two books are the second and third volumes of a three-part sailing memoir of ocean voyages made by Jan, her husband, Ian, and their two sons. Ian Mitchell is an Australian sailor who, during the 1970s, circumnavigated the world in twenty-five foot Caprice with his wife, Jan Mitchell. He has written and published several articles in sailing magazines. He worked as a Civil Engineer for Water Resources in NSW.
