Twelve Against the Gods: A Positronic Book

Overview

Twelve Against the Gods by William Bolitho is a dazzling exploration of adventure, ambition, and rebellion. First published in 1929, this literary classic profiles twelve legendary figures-among them Alexander the Great, Casanova, Napoleon, and Charles XII-who dared to defy convention and fate in pursuit of greatness. Each chapter is a gripping tale of a life lived on the edge, challenging the gods of order, reason, and safety. Bolitho doesn't merely recount history; he revives it with wit, drama, and insight, revealing the risk-taking spirit that drives human progress-and destruction. Perfect for lovers of biography, philosophy, and bold storytelling, this book is both a celebration and a cautionary tale of what it means to live adventurously. It's not just history-it's a manifesto for dreamers, rebels, and anyone who refuses to live quietly.

Author Information

William Bolitho (1891-1930) was a fearless journalist, war correspondent, and thinker whose short life burned brightly with brilliance and intensity. Born Charles William Ryall, he adopted the pen name William Bolitho and quickly made a name for himself writing for publications like The New York World and The Manchester Guardian. His sharp mind, biting wit, and fearless curiosity took him from the battlefields of World War I to the salons of Paris, where he counted writers like Ernest Hemingway and Noël Coward among his admirers.Bolitho had a rare gift: he could take the lives of history's most daring figures and make them feel dangerously alive. In Twelve Against the Gods, his most famous and only major book, he examines the essence of the adventurer-not just in action, but in spirit. Though he died tragically young at the age of 39, Bolitho left behind a work that continues to challenge and inspire those who dream beyond limits.
