Overview

Told from the mysterious, damp, Pacific Northwest from a boat-dweller's point of view, this book for all ages reimagines a classic holiday poem. 'Twas the Night before Solstice provides an alternative, earth-positive way to celebrate this special time of year. This is a story that can find its way into annual traditions. The Winter Solstice, the returning of the light, rebirth, and renewal have long been an important part of human history and how we get through dark times and deep winter. This book reminds us to appreciate this special time of year and find the most value in real things, like nature and each other. Turning these beautifully illustrated pages will feel like a cozy night in the misty grey skies of the coastal PNW.

Author Information

Jeremy Hunter Rubingh is a filmmaker, writer, artist, nature advocate, and Alaska commercial fisherman. He believes that we can fight evil by making art. He has worked at the nexus of creative storytelling, conservation, and politics for much of his career, developing campaigns, media strategy, and diverse voice engagement on a variety of environmental and social justice issues for various foundations. He spends part of his year in a remote village in Bristol Bay, Alaska where he runs a commercial sockeye salmon fishing operation with Frances, his wonderful wife, and his dog, Kuma, as well as several coastal grizzly bears. Jeremy currently lives aboard his sailboat, S/V Raven, in Seattle, Washington where he feels lucky to connect with the Salish Sea, old growth forests, and the snow-covered volcanoes of the Coast Mountains. Andrew Steers is an illustrator, teacher, and sailor. He lives aboard his sailboat with his lovely wife and goofy dog, just across the dock from Jeremy. Savannah LeCornu is an indigenous artist, part of the Tsimshian, Haida, and Nez Perce tribes. She lives with her cat, Spaghetti, in Ketchikan AK, where she loves to hunt for beach treasures.
